The Saying of the Day

Recently I was trying to illustrate how that belief or the lack of belief affects our lives and sets our limits. I came up with this true little saying about my life.

"When I thought I could, I did more.
When I believed I could, I did even more.
But when I knew I could, I was surprised with all that I did."
Scott Hogue

Someone said, "Would you repeat that so I could write it down?" I managed to repeat it and like the woman in court on the witness stand I realized I had told the truth without knowing it. I have done more when I thought I could do more.  I have done even more when I believed I could do more, but when I knew that I knew I could, then I did even more that I realized was possible.

William James, the father of modern psychology knew in the late 1800's that we set our own limits with the limits of our beliefs. Maxwell Maltz, the plastic surgeon turned psychologist developed the psychology of the self image and helped many people overcome their problems and attain their goals by helping them with their self image. The reason he was successful is our self image sets our limits on what we believe is possible for ourselves. Dr. Joyce Brothers said that we cannot maintain a life that is inconsistent with our beliefs and our definition of ourselves.

This is why we hear so many doctors, coaches, teachers and motivators say that you have "to be to do." You have to become that person inside to bring to life the kind of life that person would live. With all of the information, books, radio shows, podcasts, clinics, diet foods, doctors and groups we all know how to lose weight by now. There are a lot of different ways to do it, but it all comes down to eat less and exercise more. Even though we know what to do, millions of people in the United States are overweight. Why is that? It is the same reason people lose weight and then soon gain it back. We will not lose the weight and keep it off until we see ourselves as a thinner person that can do the things healthy people do and deserves the advantages a healthy person enjoys.

NASA proved visualization works. In sports the NBA, NFL, MLB and many other sports groups have proved it works. Russia proved it worked in weight lifting. The US Olympic bobsled team has even proved it works when bobsledding. Fortune 500 companies use it all the time. Why? Because it works. Why does it work? In part because it raises our level of belief in ourselves and our beliefs tend to become our realities.

Isn't it time you started a program to raise the level of your belief in yourself?

Scott

I was teaching a business professional about the certain way principle in Wallace Wattles book, "The Science of Getting Rich" and I used my new "appendix" method to illustrate the point. I have used this with several people and they got the idea quickly and this man was no different. This method gets the idea across so quickly and clearly I think I will use it exclusively.  It is an idea  I had late one night and it really helps people quickly get the concept. Here it is at no charge for your personal benefit:

Wallace D. Wattles said that we don't get rich by doing certain things, we get rich by doing things in a certain way.
Here is how I explain it, I am sure I could remove your appendix. I have seen pictures, I know where it is, I am sure I could remove your appendix, however a doctor would remove it in a different way than I would, but we could both remove your appendix. I am sure the results would be different. We have both done the same thing, remove your appendix, but we would do it differently and surely with different results. It is not so much what we do, the real difference is in how we do it. I would do it a certain way and the doctor would do it in a different certain way.

That is what Wattles is talking about in "The Science of Getting Rich." Two real estate agents sell real estate. One makes good money and the other one is broke. Why? Not because of the difference in what they do, they both sell real estate. It is the difference in the way they do it. The difference is one does things in a certain or planned and proven way starting with a specific idea, the other one does it in a haphazard or maybe even in a planned way but an ineffective way and without that idea.

Have you ever wondered why someone doing the same thing you were doing and they got much better results?  Now you know why, they did it in a "Certain" way. I can't teach the entire principle and how to use it here in my blog, but I will give you some more information that may be helpful. People that succeed in the world do things with "intention." That is the start of what makes the difference. There are other things as well, but just by starting with intention it takes these people down a different road to get what they want than the person that starts without this intention.

How is your appendix?

Why Not?

Today is my grandson's birthday, but I found out two days ago that his party will be Friday at 11 a.m. My daughter has gone back to school and also works at a job while she launches her career, so her free hours are a bit scattered. If I had a job it might be hard to get time off in such short notice, but since I have businesses instead of jobs I can be at the party right on time. Now, don't take this wrong, I still have to work. Sometimes I think I work harder in my businesses than I did in my jobs, but my businesses give me flexibility. I woke up at 3 a.m. this morning and decided to do a little work while I couldn't sleep. I made use of the time in a way I couldn't have if I made my living in a job.

If I were not to work for an entire day or for an entire week for that matter, my income would go down some, but it wouldn't stop. I can usually move things around and have some free time at the drop of a hat as long as I make it up later. If I die I can leave my business to a loved one or I could have it sold and the money go to my wife and children. You can't do that with a job. The largest expense category the average American will ever pay is taxes. You have practically no deductions for working at a job, but you can have deductions if you own your own business. Over the years I have lost several jobs without notice and it happens to people in this economy every day. A large part of my business is on the internet and although I have two home offices I do a lot of work away from my home. If some disaster destroyed my home I would still have enough left to pick up and go on.

What I am getting to is "Why Not?" start a business? I find that negative ideas and negative thinking prevent most people from starting a business. People think starting a business is hard to do. Jim Rohn said he teaches children it is easy to start a business. He said he tells children to have two bicycles, one to ride and one to rent. My daughter in law bakes goods to sell at the Farmer's Market. She grows berries, garden goods, farm animals and runs a small printing business from their home. She also has a full time job. When they have children it is quite possible she will quit the job at some point, but not quit making money.

Another thing I hear is "I don't know how." Do you think Bill Gates knew how to start microsoft as a young man and make billions from it? He didn't when he started, he figured it out as he went along. Information and help are both out there. The main thing keeping people from starting their own business is their excuses. So, "Why Not?"

I have been preparing some materials for a class over the course of a few days and I was talking to a friend about what I was doing and also about the first step to wealth (Getting the information.) He asked how I knew I had the right information to pass on. I told him that over the years that three books keep coming up on that list. There are three books that people continue to contribute their success to and these books have also worked well for me. I would list four myself, the first three and another book based on one of the three in the list. Are you curious?

Here they are:
The Holy Bible King James Version
The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace D. Wattles
Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill
and honorable mention and a close fourth place goes to
How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie, Dale has some good bible teachings like the "Golden Rule" in his book.

So, let's review the first step to wealth, get the information.
You have to have the right information and there is no substitute for something that has been proven over and over again to work. However, don't forget that there are some "secrets" in the wealth process and not everyone can get the useful meaning out of these books without some guidance. Then too, there are the other two steps to wealth to master.

Other books that deal with the same principles are "As a Man Thinketh," "An Iron Will," "Acres of Diamonds" and "How to Have Power and Confidence in Dealing with People." Of course there are others.

The four books I first mentioned and a good, older dictionary would be the start of my library if I wanted to take steps to get rich again. You can check out the student page for more information and some links to Amazon.

Not Me!

I get spam like everyone else does. I was just noticing the subject line in a message from some spammer. "ARE YOU ABOUT TO GET FIRED?" That subject did get a response from me, but not the response the spammer was hoping for. I laughed. I haven't had a job in over 15 years. I lost my last job 15 years ago when the company was taken over and manufacturing was moved out of our area and some of it even out of the United States. Now have I been sitting on my couch for 15 years? No, I have been working in my own business. I am my own boss and I think it highly unlikely that I will fire myself any time soon. Now, in reality, my customers are my bosses and I could lose a customer, but I couldn't lose my job.

We have a problem here in the United States that is becoming more and more apparent in this economy. We are job minded, not productivity minded. I was talking to a man recently that said he had been looking for work for two years now. I told him to follow me, I had plenty of work he could do. The man asked me what kind of job it was and I told him it wasn't a job, it was work. That was enough to send him running. The man wasn't looking for work, he was looking for someone to give him a check on a regular basis.

When I travel overseas I see some of the "Third World" countries where the people are actually doing better from year to year. They are thinking "business" and not "job." They are running all kinds of little businesses, some from their homes, some from shops and a surprising number from huts!

We started in the United States as an agricultural nation. The farmer was an independent businessman or woman. Hardly anyone had what we would call a job. Now it is the other way around. Most people are looking for a job and few people are independent business people. How is that working for us? Not too well lately.

I remember an old cartoon I saw years ago. It had two old buzzards sitting in a tree and one said, "I am tired of waiting for something to die, I am about to go kill something to eat!" If you are tired of waiting for someone to offer you a job that they can take away from you at any time without notice, then make your own job in your own business.

We don't have too many jobs these days, but we have plenty of work and work in the end still pays!

I was just talking to someone about the benefits of the "Three Steps to Wealth" University. The benefits are the same benefits of any applied education. My early career was one of a manager and I worked for three Fortune 500 companies in the process. All three companies put an emphasis on education but one company sponsored education and continuing education for its employees a little more than the rest. That company was Berkshire Hathaway. Looking back I think it is no wonder why this company stands out from the rest in the business world today. I will always be grateful for the education opportunities that were extended to me as I worked for Berkshire Hathaway and its subsidiary Scott Fetzer.

Benjamin Franklin said that if you empty your purse into your head no one can steal it. He meant that if you take your money and buy knowledge that no one can take that away. A lot of my friends have lost their jobs as those jobs went overseas, but they didn't lose their education, knowledge and experience. Some of my friends have done very well with what they emptied into their heads.

One seminar I attended "back in the day" was taught by Zig Ziglar. He said that you can have anything you want if you will only help enough other people get what they want. Simple statement, but a great bit of knowledge to put into your head.

It means if you are a salesperson, if you help enough people that want your product and the product's benefits get what they want,  that you can get the money to buy the things you want. The same if you are a farmer or a factory worker or a real estate agent or an insurance salesperson. When you serve people in our economy you can have the things you want and you will be served as a result. Just think about that. What people need is the knowledge, ability and opportunity to serve.

We are expanding the "Three Steps to Wealth" University. Early testing has been very favorable. If you want to improve your financial life then you just might want to stay tuned to this blog and check the student page for the resources the students are using. For the time being it is still taught one on one, but my goal is to make this available online in the future. In the meantime you can read the books the students are reading by going to the student page.

One of the reasons we don't have this online yet is we work one on one with graduating students to get them into some form of wealth vehicle. All the teaching in the world does no good unless there is an action the reaps a reward. The type of support necessary to ensure success in this phase is difficult to provide online and we are working toward a new way of doing that. Our goal is to make the online version just as life changing for the online students as it has been for the one on one students. If you can imagine the power in one on one coaching you can see what a challenge that is, but we have some great people working on it.
Till then,
best,
Scott Hogue

Hopefully I am through with eye surgery for a while. I have been working on projects, I just haven't been dozing, but with a computer crash, a few health problems, some new business projects and well you know how it is. I am making a new commitment to keep the blog up to date. I will be directing some of my business partners here for additional information.

The Achievement project took on a life of its own and is turning into a book. I will keep my promise to offer a free version with all the necessary steps here.

Now that I have my computer backup and the passwords worked out I will be back soon.

best to all,
Scott

First let me update you on the Achievement Process steps I am working on. It is taking a little longer, but it will be a lot better than if I just copied and pasted from my notes. The good news is it still will be free. I think it is up to 15 pages on the computer now, so it is looking more like a short book. Keep coming back and checking.

Next-The Three Minute Human Relationship Course.
Someone asked me to make a short presentation on human relationships. I asked how long I had and they said, "oh, about 5 minutes."
Human relationships in five minutes? There is a reason they called me, I do things like this. I got it down to three minutes when I tell it, it might take an extra minute or two to read it here with some of the explanations I will offer. Remember, people are the species on this planet that have money, make decisions, and to the largest extent help you in your life, so this is very important.

1. Realize the importance of people in your life. To do this imagine that you woke up this morning and you were the only person on earth. What would you do? Most people would probably die fairly soon. Our lives are so dependent on others for even the routine things. No more food delivered to the grocery. No more electricity. No health care,  No one to talk to. People have committed suicide when placed in solitary confinement just from lack of companionship good or bad. Do this exercise every morning when you get out of bed: Imagine  you are the only one on earth and appreciate the importance of people and our relationships with them.

2. Napoleon Hill said to treat everyone as a rich relative that was about to die and leave you millions if you stayed in their will. You probably would be tolerant and kind with this person. You wouldn't need to read a book on how to get along with rich relatives. This is a good point.  We know how to get along with people, we just don't do it.

3. Ask everyone you deal with regularly in your family life, business or other means of contact to rate your relationship on a scale of 1-10. For a loved one try something like this, "You and our relationship is  very important to me, so I can respect and improve our relationship would you rate it on a scale of 1-10 for me?" If it is a business partner, client or other business contact then maybe use something like this, "Our business relationship is very important to me and I value you as a friend, how would you rate our relationship (friendship) on a scale of 1-10?" You can rework it to make it appropriate for the relationship and person. Then if they say anything less than a 10 ask them what you could do to make it a 10 and if reasonable and possible do it.

That is it, Relationships 1. Yes there is a Relationships 2 and someday I will try to get to that.

best,
Scott
